# Gary Le Sueur — CV and professional experience

Source: https://www.gaz.dev/cv

Founding Engineer · Technical Lead · Full-Stack

Open to new projects · Remote / hybrid UK

I have over 30 years of experience building software, alongside hands-on experience founding, running, growing and selling a business. I founded and built SCR Tracker, grew it to US$1M ARR in three years and led its successful exit. I now work on CalmCompliance and other ventures, using AI and coding agents to build more while staying responsible for architecture, security, infrastructure and delivery. I help with new products, technical problems, business growth and exit preparation.

## Professional experience

### CalmCompliance

Founding Engineer · Jan 2025 - Present · Remote

- One of two founding engineers, taking CalmCompliance from a blank sheet to a live product and shaping it day to day with the people who use it.
- Designed and built connected workflows across premises and assets, maintenance, policies, risk assessments, training, incidents, and flexible forms, giving multi-site teams one place to run and evidence their compliance work.
- Delivered practical features including QR-based reporting without an app or login, recurring schedules, document distribution and acknowledgements, and complete audit trails.
- Built AI into policy drafting, risk assessments, and issue triage, helping users turn a blank page or raw report into useful, actionable compliance work more quickly.

Technology and scope: React 19, TypeScript, TanStack Start, Multi-tenant SaaS, AI evals, OpenRouter.

### Sign In App

President / Principal Engineer · Jan 2023 - Dec 2024 · Remote

- Led a two-year post-acquisition handover, transferring product and technical ownership through structured onboarding, pairing, live code reviews, and architectural documentation.
- Integrated SCR Tracker into the wider Sign In App product by reshaping APIs and data pipelines while continuing to ship fixes, upgrades, and customer-led features.
- Introduced production AI reporting, form generation, document summarisation, agents, and semantic retrieval with OpenAI, Inngest AgentKit, and MongoDB Atlas Vector Search.

Technology and scope: Technical handover, React, Node.js, GraphQL, Production AI, RAG & agents, SOC 2 exposure.

### SCR Tracker

Founding Engineer / Managing Director · Mar 2018 - Dec 2022 · Bournemouth / Remote

- Founded and built a multi-tenant recruitment-compliance SaaS platform for UK schools, growing it to US$1M ARR in three years and adoption by more than 2,000 schools.
- Owned hands-on architecture and delivery across Next.js, React, TypeScript, Node.js, MongoDB, and AWS, including tenant isolation, permissions, auditability, and production operations.
- Implemented ISO 27001, built and hired the team, and led the successful exit to Sign In App, including technical and commercial due diligence.

Technology and scope: Next.js, React, TypeScript, Node.js, Multi-tenant SaaS, AWS, ISO 27001.

### Sky

Lead Developer · Sep 2016 - Sep 2018 · Isleworth

- One of two lead developers on a five-person team building Sky Go desktop from the ground up with Electron, React, and JavaScript.
- Worked directly with a Sky Q box and wrote the discovery and recordings integration, using an existing Sky Q API to let users view recordings stored on their box through the desktop app.
- Worked across design and backend teams to deliver a maintainable cross-platform product that remains in production across Sky Go and Sky Glass.
- Mentored junior and graduate engineers as part of the lead team through pairing, technical guidance, and day-to-day development support.

Technology and scope: Electron, React, JavaScript, Redux, Node.js, Sky Q integration, Technical leadership.

### PureGym

Senior Developer · Dec 2015 - Jul 2016 · Southampton

- Delivered a React and C# customer booking platform for memberships and class reservations across more than 300 UK gyms.
- Improved performance and reliability by tracing load bottlenecks and refining backend logic within a 12-person cross-functional team.

Technology and scope: React, Redux, C#, .NET MVC, Performance.

### Selected earlier work

Senior Engineer & Technical Lead · 1998 - 2015 · UK

- At McLaren F1, built high-throughput telemetry systems that ingested huge volumes of live data from the cars and turned it into real-time displays for engineers.
- Spent roughly 12 years with Babcock delivering software for the Royal Navy in ISO 27001-controlled environments, including visits to submarines and surface ships to understand the operational context first-hand.
- Developed NOW TV apps for Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
- Progressed from junior developer to technical lead across real-time, defence, financial, and media systems, with additional work for BNP Paribas and Codestone.

Technology and scope: C#, WPF, Real-time telemetry, 3D modelling, Simulation, Team leadership.

## Current toolkit

TypeScript, React, Node.js, Next.js, TanStack, PostgreSQL, Drizzle, GraphQL, WebSockets, Cloudflare, AWS, Vercel, Railway, Multi-tenant SaaS, RBAC, Audit logging, Production AI, AI evals, AI agents, RAG, OpenAI, OpenRouter, Docker.

## Side projects

I build most of these to learn something new: a technology, a technique, or an idea, rather than to ship a product. Each one is a note on what I was trying to figure out.

### [Dungeon Master](https://dungeonmaster.gaz.dev/)

An AI game master that runs tabletop-style adventures with generated music, sound effects and fully voiced characters.

Why I built it: Wanted to go deeper on AI-driven game mechanics and generative audio.

Technology: AI agents, ElevenLabs, Google Lyria, PostgreSQL.

### [Artemis Tracker](https://artemis2.gaz.dev/)

A 3D visualisation built on NASA's public Artemis II trajectory data, showing the mission's path around the Moon.

Why I built it: Space plus a throwback to my 3D-modelling and game-dev days, and an excuse to learn three.js.

Technology: three.js, WebGL, NASA data.

### [AskEaves](https://www.askeaves.com/)

An MCP-first home-automation agent with a multi-condition rule engine and custom connectors for every smart device in the house.

Why I built it: Didn't gel with Home Assistant, so I started building my own AI-driven smart-home brain.

Technology: MCP, AI agents, Docker, Railway.

### Tidy

A person-first, Slack-style chat interface for conversations, with email as the transport rather than the UI.

Why I built it: To explore what email feels like when it is organised around people and conversations instead of inboxes and messages.

Technology: Electron, SQLite, Drizzle, OpenAI.

### Skillup

A Duolingo-style geography app powered by AI-generated courses, designed to adapt to other subjects too.

Why I built it: My wife wanted to learn geography; I wanted to test AI course generation and get current with Expo.

Technology: Expo, React Native, Convex, TanStack Query.

### [MakeMySite](https://makemysite.app/)

A website generator that turns a short brief into a finished, deployable site, refined across several iterations.

Why I built it: One of my first AI builds. I wanted to see how far a generated-site pipeline could go.

Technology: Next.js, Vercel AI SDK, Inngest, Better Auth.

## About Gary

I'm married with two young children, so family life keeps me happily busy outside work.

I'm a big DIY enthusiast. I've refurbished and sold a house, and most recently we all but knocked down and rebuilt our family home, with a lot of help along the way.

I'm also a lifelong science-fiction film and TV fan, enjoy audiobooks, and love Formula 1, space, and physics. To keep fit, I train at the gym with my wife.

I'm open to conversations about founding-engineer, technical-lead, and hands-on product roles - remote-first or hybrid in the UK.
